The Silicon Valley Prayer Breakfast Announces its 15th Annual Speaker Event

This Year’s Prayer Breakfast Set for
March 12, 2009 at the Marriott, Santa Clara;

 Record Attendance Anticipated due to Economic Downturn

Santa Clara, Calif., Feb. 17, 2009 – The Silicon Valley Prayer Breakfast (SVPB) today announced that its 2009 speaker event will be held Thursday March 12, 2009.  The breakfast provides a comfortable opportunity for people of all levels of faith to hear successful leaders give testimony to the power of faith and prayer in their lives.  Organized by volunteers, the breakfast is in its fifteenth year. Attendees who come primarily from the business, medical and educational communities of Silicon Valley are anticipated to total nearly 400 people.  This year’s keynote speakers will be Col. Rex J. Walheim, NASA Astronaut, and Cheryl Ho, MD, Medical Director, Valley Homeless Healthcare Program.  Both will speak on “The Joy of Serving”.  In addition, several other well known Silicon Valley government and business leaders will be participating.  The event takes place on Thursday, March 12 from 7:00 to 8:30 AM at the Marriott Hotel in Santa Clara, 2700 Mission College Boulevard.

SVPB steering committee chair Skip Vaccarello noted, “In light of the recent economic downturn, people are searching for hope and inspiration.  Based on the caliber of speakers and the opportunity for networking, we expect that the event will sell out this year, and that those in attendance will be inspired by stories of personal fulfillment that comes from service to others.”

Col. Rex J Walheim, NASA Astronaut

Col. Walheim has completed two space flights with his most recent in February 2008.  On that mission, Rex and the crew visited the International Space Station, traveled over 5 million miles in 203 orbits, and took three space walks.  His previous mission in 2002 marked the first time the station’s robotic arm was used to maneuver spacewalkers around the station.  Rex is a Bay Area native, calling San Carlos his hometown.  He graduated from San Carlos High School and received a BS degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.  He was commissioned in the Air Force and earned an MS degree in industrial engineering from the University of Houston.  Rex is married and has two children.  In his talk, Rex intends to discuss the unique path that led him from the Bay Area all the way to outer space.

Cheryl Ho, MD, Medical Director, Valley Homeless Healthcare Program

The Valley Homeless Healthcare Program is a nationally recognized program that provides both medical and psychiatric care to the homeless of Santa Clara County.  As director of the program, Cheryl considers it a privilege and honor to serve the most vulnerable members of the Silicon Valley every day.  Cheryl and her team care for the chronically homeless, individuals with drug and alcohol addiction, the mentally ill, runaway youth, and migrant farm workers.  She is also the co-founder and president of the Silicon Valley Christian Health Alliance, a faith-based non-profit organization that provides medical and dental care to the homeless and those recovering from drug and alcohol addiction at CityTeam Ministries in San Jose.  Cheryl is also a clinical instructor at the Stanford School of Medicine.  She is married, received her undergraduate degree from Stanford and her M.D. from UC San Diego.
